For years, men’s fragrances all smelled the same.

Think cedar, leather, tobacco and spices, presented as the masculine choice, while rose, jasmine and peony were pushed towards the women’s section.

The thing is, men have been wearing floral notes for much longer than the marketing will have you know.

More men are actively seeking out perfumes with floral notes, with fragrance brands responding with collections that feel less tied to old category rules and more focused on the scent itself. Keep reading to learn more.

Can Men Wear Floral Fragrances?

Men can wear floral fragrances because not all floral notes are specifically for men or women.

Lavender has appeared in men’s aftershaves for decades. Geranium regularly features in fougère fragrances. Orange blossom and neroli have long histories in colognes and Mediterranean-inspired scents.

For most men, floral notes in masculine perfumes are not new, but ones they have been wearing for years (maybe without even realising it).

Some of the Biggest Men’s Fragrances Already Contain Flowers

Floral notes are already in some of the best-selling men’s fragrances in the world.

Sauvage contains lavender alongside bergamot, pepper and ambroxan.

Luna Rossa Carbon combines lavender with metallic notes, pepper and patchouli.

Flowers appear elsewhere too.

Acqua di Parma Colonia contains neroli, lavender and rose alongside citrus notes.

Noir de Noir places rose at the centre of the fragrance and surrounds it with oud, patchouli and vanilla.

Even iris, a note often associated with women’s perfume, has become a signature ingredient in masculine fragrances such as Homme Intense.

Once you start looking at ingredient lists, floral notes appear almost everywhere in men’s perfumery.

Floral Notes Men Are Already Wearing

✓ Lavender – The backbone of countless aftershaves, fougères and barbershop fragrances.

✓ Geranium – Fresh, green and slightly minty with a profile that sits comfortably alongside woods and citrus notes.

✓ Neroli – Bright and clean with a crisp Mediterranean feel.

✓ Iris – Smooth and refined with a soft powdery finish.

✓ Rose – Often paired with oud, patchouli or spices to create richer evening fragrances.

Why the Men’s Floral Perfume Trend Will Continue

The fragrance industry is moving towards more flexible categories, like unisex perfumes, and consumers appear increasingly comfortable exploring outside traditional boundaries.

It says less about changing masculinity and more about changing shopping habits with most fragrance buyers are asking the same question they have always asked:

Do I enjoy wearing this?

For a growing number of men, the answer increasingly includes flowers. And why not? They’re some of the most stunning notes in perfumery.
